Hospital Cellular Profile

Cleveland Regional Medical Center (CRMC) is a 216 bed hospital

with two long term care facilities located in Cleveland County, NC. The facility offers comprehensive services to more than 120,000 residents and specializes in oncology, cardiology, rehabilitation services, critical care and women’s and children’s services. CMRC is the main hospital in a three hospital system and is an integral part of the largest non-for-profit healthcare systems in the country.

Poor Cellular Reception – Business Situation

CMRC had poor to non-existent cellular reception in many areas of the medical center. The prevailing concern was that physicians’ were unable to receive pages and critical data on their PDA’s while in the hospital. One area in particular that had non-existent cellular reception was the physicians’ lounge. This posed a huge dilemma for the doctor’s and CMRC; the technology available to transmit and receive data was not reliable due to the lack of reception.

Cellular Signal Situation

Harris Communications conducted a site survey and determined that the construction of the facility, combined with the topography around the facility as well as the location of the cellular towers was prohibiting cellular signal in the hospital. An in building distributive antenna solution (DAS) was needed to ensure reliable cellular connectivity.

Cellular Repeater Solution

Harris Communications designed a cellular repeater DAS solution that accommodated multiple carriers and ensured strong cellular signal throughout the areas enhanced with cellular repeaters. This solution offered the option of staged implementation to accommodate the budgetary needs of CRMC. Harris Communications proposed cellular repeater solution was designed to complement the existing infrastructure of CMRC, maintain the aesthetics of the building and achieve reliable cellular reception.

Cellular Reception Benefits

CMRC has reliable in-building cellular reception in and around the physician’s lounge. This ensures that physician’s will receive pages and critical data when in the area that previously offered no cellular reception. CMRC can fully maximize the wireless infrastructure they have in place to communicate effectively with physicians. In addition, CMRC has the ability to grow the solution to meet technological demands as the medical center grows to meet the needs of the community.
