In-Building Emergency Responder System
Harris Communications implements the first In-Building emergency responder communication system in accordance with the City of Charlotte Fire and Public Safety Repeater Ordinance.
Charlotte, NC (September 3, 2008)
The need for adequate and reliable in-building communication in emergency situations has gained momentum across the nation in recent years. Burbank, California was the first U.S. city to pass an ordinance in 1991, requiring new buildings adequately ensure first responder communications.
Today there are over 40 municipalities nationwide that have followed suit, including Charlotte, NC.
First responders, including fire, police and emergency medical services often cannot effectively use their radios in larger structures. The ordinance that Charlotte has in place was carefully constructed and mandates periodic testing to ensure the systems are in working order.
Fire Repeater Systems
It is crucial to implement properly designed fire repeater systems; improperly installed systems can create interference either to the fire department channels or to other public safety radio systems.
“We are thrilled to be instrumental in the implementation of the first repeater system following the passing of the ordinance,” stated Jim McEwen, VP of National Sales for Harris Communications, “we applaud the city for acknowledging the importance of first responder communication and are honored to apply our wireless enhancement knowledge to the emerging public safety market.”
Reliable In-Building Wireless
As a result of the ordinances throughout the US, developers and building owners are starting to acknowledge that reliable in-building wireless coverage adds value for the buildings tenants, the community and emergency first responders.
